Riberenos

The River People of the Peruvian Amazon

Peru is an emerging country. Much of its population lives in the jungles of the Amazon River Basin. Many of these “Riberenos” are descendants of indigenous people who have inhabited Peru for hundreds of years. They live entirely on the natural resources of their surroundings. Some of their children and young adults are sent over the Andes Mountains to shantytowns in Lima. Here, in spite of abject poverty, they support one another and strive to improve the quality of their lives through advanced education and skills training. Many return to their river communities and work to help their people.
